Why AI Data Centres Need To Join This Conversation On Improving Co-ordination

The consultation highlighted data centres and their developers as a practical example of a wider non-household market challenge: the need for earlier coordination, better demand intelligence, and more useful conversations between large users, utilities and retailers.

For data centres in planning or expansion, one question is how future demand can be discussed early enough, and transparently enough, when cooling choices, ramp-up profiles, power availability, reuse options, site design and operating loads may still change?

For operating data centres, the question is increasingly: how does actual water use compare with original assumptions, and how can that be explained credibly to utilities, retailers, planners, customers, investors and communities?

The event will address the need-to-know issues that utilities, retailers, planners and major users are now circling around :

  • What should data centre developers share with utilities earlier, before planning assumptions harden?
  • How should future water demand be explained when cooling technology or operating load may still change?
  • How can developers discuss water-power trade-offs without oversimplifying the issue?
  • What should be treated as a known assumption, and what should be treated as a live variable?
  • How should drought resilience be addressed in water-stressed or resource-constrained regions?
  • How can actual consumption from operating data centres be compared with design assumptions?
  • What role should non-potable water, reuse,      closed-loop systems or lower-water cooling play — and where are those options realistic rather than theoretical?
  • How can community confidence be protected through earlier engagement and clearer long-term resilience messaging?
  • How can retailers support the customer relationship in the UK market, especially around usage insight, reporting,  alerts and operational follow-through?

From London, the South East, the M4 corridor and Slough to Madrid, Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, Paris and parts of southern Spain, data centre growth is increasingly raising practical questions about water resilience, infrastructure capacity, cooling strategy, power-water trade-offs and earlier utility coordination.

Learn From Data Centre Q&A In The Panel Discussions

At the event, utilities and wholesalers will want to explore:

  • How water demand changes between design, commissioning, ramp-up and full operation
  • How different cooling approaches change potable demand, peak demand and resilience risk
  • How to separate nameplate capacity from realistic operating demand
  • How to distinguish speculative growth from committed future load
  • What information should be requested at the planning stage
  • How local water stress should influence engagement, mitigation and phasing
  • How actual meter data can be used later to validate, challenge or refine assumptions
  • How data centres can show credible drought resilience without overclaiming
